I've heard that making adultery a sin was an easy way of universalizing sin for the Israelites, and since the people in charge were men, it became easy for them to shift the blame onto women. Then again, I don't remember where it was I read it, but I think the source also made remarks about this being in contrast with the Egyptians not even having a word for virginity in their language, and given that A) this appears to be drawing a link to the captivity in Egypt, which there is no objective evidence for, and B) there's a reason the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis hasn't moved beyond being a mere hypothesis in the past 90 years, this may not be totally accurate.
