I leave two carriers in my living room, with the doors open at all times. My cats are free to go in and out whenever they want. Both have blankets so they like to go in and sleep there.
Allowing this makes for an easier transition for when they have to go to the vet. I don't have to fight to get them in the carriers.
Win-win for all.
