Why does the Pope wear such funny clothing?

I have always wondered this. What difference does it make if he is wearing a dress and a funny hat??

Think of the times when Rome first adopted the church, think of what was popular dress.. now think of what the aristocrats wore, now imagine the garbe befitting emissary of God and all the piping and trim that job demands... Not what the bible says a emissary of God is to wear but what a high ranking roman cilivan offical who has that job, and then you'll have some idea as to why the pope wears what he wears.
