As was pointed out in the book Cosmos, it was religious orthodoxy and the associated oppression that killed the nascent Greek scientific revolution, mostly by killing off the best thinkers. Only for christianity was very much weakened by the wars of religion after the reformation, the Enlightenment went the same way.
