The soul (mind) itself is divided into 3 parts: reason; appetite (physical urges); and will (emotion, passion, spirit.) The will is the source of love, anger, indignation, ambition, aggression, etc. When these aspects are not in harmony, we experience mental conflict. The will can be on the side of either reason or the appetites. We might be pulled by lustful appetite, or the rational desire to find a good partner. To explain the interaction of these 3 parts of the self, Plato uses the image is of the charioteer (reason) who tries to control horses representing will and appetites.

Plato had a lot of theories.
Tons and tons of them and many of them quite good.

Unfortunately theories alone got him and anyone who follow these theories nowhere.
To get somewhere you need tons and tons of practice which is something that our brother Plato did not have so all his mental work is like a babble that explode in the air.

Doesn't the Bhagavad Gita say something like "Action (ie karma) is merely the gunas acting upon the gunas, while men in their delusion think themselves the doers of an act" ??? The view being presented there seems counter to the idea of free will. But maybe I'm misinterpreting it or something. (I think I can go find the actual verse if you want. Unless, of course, your particular brand of yoga denounces the Gita or something.)

I don't think the idea of God works for or against the idea of free will. There are plenty of atheistic free willists out there. So I don't know where you got the idea that atheism = incompatibilism.

1) I never said that the FW is incompatible with atheism.
I rather said that most atheists hate the idea of FW so it is rather incompatible with atheists in general not with atheism.  

2) To understand the role of the gunas you first got to understand the two opposite forces always present in nature like the positive and negative, yin or yang and so on.

These two forces while are not present in lower form of life such as plants and animals that follow mother nature instinct are instead present in man (men and women of course).
While the positive force try to get you up (up spiritually speaking) the negative one try to push you back towards animal, plant or even matter life so forget for a moment about these gunas and instead try to understand  the low of positive and negative which is much much more important.

Yeah, you have to wait until you reincarnate into a cow because only gods reincarnate into cows and to become god you have to first gain the knowledge. So you'll reincarnate into a god and live in Vaikuntha and then in order to talk to LR you have to come back to Earth reincarnated as a cow and LR loves talking to cows because they are the only one that understand him.

Well, well, well brother FM.

Religions say a lot of things.
Unfortunately religions are called religions for a reason and that is because they don't follow anymore the teachings of the various spiritual people from which originally they took the real knowledge from such as Shiva, Krishna, Buddha and Jesus to mention the main one.

To summarize listening to what religions say is not the same thing like to listen to the words spoken by the various spiritual beings that came before them.
