The difference between kingships, which are dictatorships, or one party states, is that all of them are controlled by a select few. Authoritarian rule is easier but less humane to dissent. Pluralism is far harder to defend.
The evolutionary reality unfortunately is that BOTH work. You can beat your rival into submission, or you can seek cooperation which works too.
Putin may not be a king, in name, but it makes no difference to me. He created the narrative and he controls it now. Authoritarian is just that, be it one man, one family or one party.
