-romanization. It's actually pretty simple. There was a practical need, at the time, to rehabilitate proto christendom in the eyes of a major power and it's citizens.
Exactly. The movement, which had become a largely Gentile movement, needed to distance itself from the Jews, who had openly rebelled against Rome. That's how we end up with Pilate supposedly conflicted about sending a royal pretender to the cross, washing his hands of responsibility, Jews baying at him for Jesus' crucifixion, etc.
