As a conservative, I assume you would agree with the need for a vigorous democratic process at the local and state levels to offset centralized power at the federal level. Devotion to federalism is supposed to be one of the pillars of your politics. I would think you would not be so cavalier about local news.
As for Jefferson's quotes, most of the papers of his time were simply partisan rags. Journalistic standards and practices have changed somewhat since then, and the better papers provide vastly better news coverage than was typical of 1800.
