If your ideological position flourishes and becomes the norm, then I'd say that grim outlook is more likely than not to become a reality. I don't think it WILL take hold in that way, since right-wing hysterics approximately balance those of the left-wing in the US, and since there are still plenty of moderates to keep the nutjobs from getting a foothold.
We'll see, I suppose.
