Empathy does not come from having gone through the same thing. For instance, my husband suffers prostate pain that is quite severe from an injury in his youth. I don't have a prostate, nor any such youthful injury that continues to cause me pain, yet I can still have sympathy for him when it occurs.
Contrariwise, having gone through a similar event does not always give one sympathy for others. When I was pregnant, I met quite a few people who were utterly dismissive of my experience and only interested in their own version.
Considering AM's wife names herself as his property, and also considering the rest of his behavior here, I suspect she says whatever he tells her to say (or what she feels is expected of her). It's just a feeling, though. I may be projecting.
