further more lee was not in support of slavery his wife family owned them, he wanted to set them free she did not, but agree to do so on the death of her father. the letter below is from lee explaining this tot he ny times 3 years before the war. then one year before lincolon emansipation while the south was winning the war lee set 150 of his family slave free upon the death of his father in law "Mr. Curtis".. Again while he was general of the confederate Army!

For many of you who would take down the statue of lee for these reason we put them up in the first place. For lee the war was not about slavery he had his own mind about that. it was about the rights of the southern states, and federalization. before the civil war each state was it's own contry who was allowed to make it's own laws except when it came time to defend the nation. like for example if abortion was a thing. each state could make it's own decision, which was true on every topic not covered by the constitution or the bill of rights... while the federal government kept infringing on these right slavery being a big one.. not the right to keep slaves but the rights to transport slaves west of the mississippi.
The north had an influx of white immigrants who they were trying to send west for jobs and could not do that is it were filled with slaves. So the idea was to cut off slavery at the mississippi river and push the white immigrants into the west and out of the cities back east. Originally neither side gave two squirts about freeing black people. it was not till the north was loosing and needed black people to fill out the ranks of the army did freeing the slaves become apart of the civil war. here is a letter lincoln sent to the editor of the NY tribune, telling his just that. He only concern is to save the union. if that means slaves then we will have slaves and if it means we must free them then we will do that! he does not care one way or the other.

Right now we have a shared culture and a shared morality because of the church. it is through the church we can come together and thrive as americans... What I'm saying is without the church there is no other commonality between white and black culture, even our core fundamental values/morality are different when you move away from the church.
