It seems to me that Christians today see that religion and days of Christianity are numbered, that it doesn't make sense anymore and it's debunked long time ago. They are aware of this and thus are pushing for things like alt-right and Donald Trump as a last attempt to, not perhaps stop scientific progress, but to more like troll the society; they have totally lost their course and really don't know what they're doing anymore, and now that their identity is in crisis they are just desperately waving their hands trying to grab on anything as some sort of a drowning man. And they'll be doing this until they realize that they're not drowning and that the world will be much better without Christianity.
