My Ph.D. thesis would have been "Translation Error and Bias in the Magic Documents Prior to Dec.7th, 1941 by the US Army's Signals Intercept Service and the US Navy's Op-20G group." The Japanese language specialists had three choices for dubious words, "soft, medium, hard". They invariably used the "hard" choice, making the Japanese appear highly belligerent. (Whether they actually were would have taken up an entire chapter.) The thrust of my study was to discuss whether the choices S.I.S. and Op-20G made were the most appropriate ones in those circumstances.
