I guess that much as with the Blair/Brown UK "New Labour" government, Hillary manifests further to the right than their nominal position would suggest, in the hope of securing centrist/marginal right-leaning votes. There is also the problem in the states that anything at all to the left is branded "socialist" or even "communist", where even the former is a toxic word in the US zeitgeist because of the cold war. My labour party membership card has the word "socialist" on it. I bet Dem party members couldn't say the same, unfortunately.
This may be the end result of America being the dumping ground for the rejects of every other nation (especially the Europeans, Anglo-Saxon Protestant European nations doubly so): the political scene becomes fundamentally broken.
Honestly, from what I've read of Goldwater, especially compared with his successors half a century later, I could say that he'd probably be kicked out of the Republican party today, but he'd probably thrive in another country's conservative party.
