In secular terms, let's say Joe murders his wife, but all Jim does is cheat on his taxes. If both die unshriven, Joe goes straight to hell and is pretty well fucked. Jim, on the other hand, might just have to spend 10 000 years being lashed with chains dipped in acid for knowingly failing to disclose the NZ$50 his neighbour paid him for mending the shed.
