Nobody can quite define it
For all Christians in the Thomist tradition, a soul is defined as the form (morphe) of the body. It cannot exist without matter (hyle).
The unbelievable part is their faith that the same form will be translated at death onto a different kind of matter.
I don't know what percentage of Christians think this, but Catholicism is generally Thomist, so it's a basic part of Catholic dogma.
