Atheists being asked about the existence of Jesus
January 2, 2019 at 4:28 pm
A lot of atheists, myself included, believe that Jesus might've never existed, not even as a regular human. I'm pretty sure that it happens in most if not all cases of coming out to unsopportive friends and family, that the outedt person is asked whenever they believe that Jesus existed as a person and was a good man. What should they respond? Should they tell the truth or change the subject?

"I don't know" seems an honest answer.

Unless you know better, ofc.
The man in the book, that you're being asked about..is no more or less real than Jonathan Harker. It's up to you whether or not you want to communicate that, OP..or go along to get along. Contrary to popular belief......"jesus" isn't going to punish you for telling an inconvenient truth about "jesus"..... even though other people might, lol.

"That's a very nice story. Sounds a lot like Zoroaster."
But then you're stuck with telling them about Zoroaster.

Only you know your family and friends. I am honest and even blunt with people I know cannot affect my life. But when it comes to family and even work, and especially if you are a teen, it isn't that easy. You need to put food on your table, so being out of a job is not good. If you are a teen depending on parents, that can be even worse. This gets a "case by case", and "it depends" and ultimately only you are the best person to judge your own family and co workers.

Oddly, in the convos I've had with Christians, I'm always the one who brings up the historicity of Jesus - it never seems to occur to believers to question his existence. It goes (generally) something like this:
Me: 'Well, I don't believe Jesus was the son of God.'
Them: 'What about those miracles in the Bible? How do you explain that?'
Me: 'Pretty much the same way I explain stories about Cinderella and Jack the Giant Slayer.'
Them: 'But they weren't real people.'
Me: 'Like I said...'
Them: *stunned silence*

Again this really does depend on your situation. What are your financial concerns (ie: are you financially independent)? What is your family like? What is your relationship with them like?
This came up once with my family, and as I was an adult I answered honestly. I don’t buy the hard mythicist position. It’s not impossible I just don’t buy it.

Honestly, the question is irrelevant outside of academia. My own knowledge of history is almost non-existent so I don't even feel qualified to have an opinion on whether or not there was a real person who inspired the fiction of the New Testament. Nor does it matter to me.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

You could always set up the Fight Club rules with those folks.
You might want to change rules 6 and 8, definitely 6.

It makes no difference one way or the other. The silly stories are still silly.
