Me personally I'm generally a substance dualist. The spirit (pneuma) is the part of us that speaks with God, separate from the "ruah" or inner strength of a person, and the Holy Spirit which speaks back to us with God's voice.
Jewish culture really didn't ascribe to a separate soul from the body. it's was all a body embodied with God's breath
