It does attract people in need of help. A lot of people do find help and comfort in it. People also look for justifications for their bad behavior in it and find it. We all have a tendency to see what we want to see.
If it's old and outdated, what makes it less valuable? I believe anyone who studies the past in any field would disagree with you. Even science is based on previously proven science.

It is irrelevant if people find comfort in religion, the subject was how religion influences them. They could find more comfort in things like the Halo effect or the By-Stander effect, psychology has come a long way.
History - studying what beings that exist did in the past
Science- using previous knowledge to gain more accurate knowledge
Religion- a kind of code of morals based on assumptions made thousands of years ago by some anonimes which were inspired by a supposed God.
