If the recently dead are allowed, I would go with Pat Tillman. For those who don't remember, he was a player for the NFL Arizona Cardinals who turned down a multi-million dollar contract so he could enlist in the US Army and fight against terrorism. He was officially killed in Afghanistan by friendly fire although many believe he was fragged (killed deliberately by his own men).
