Your grandfather was a racist who didn't like his neighbors. Being a military man means jack shit, dime a dozen. He hit you with a stick for something to do with your shoes? This was traditional in your country eh?

Then you wouldn't want to live in where my grandfather's grandfather from. Because he came here after the Bolsheviks took power in Russia, leaving Crimea and settling down in Turkey. I don't think that I'd want to live anywhere else.
I like it here. I like my family, I like the place where I live, I like the people that are around me. I'd be bored to death if I lived in any western country, like I was when I lived in Germany for three years, and even there, I generally hung out with a bunch of guys from a grey wolf ocak in Kreuzberg, who are, as you'd expect, Turks.

Why? Respect must be earned... You don't respect someone for a physical trait. That is ridiculous. They can't help being old. They may have lived a long time, but that doesn't mean they have done anything in their lives to warrant respect.

I respect someone because they deserve it, not because some ass says it is tradition and you must.

And you don't disrespect them because you simply can.
Indeed, if you don't know them, do it for the sakes of those who do.
