Yeah, that fell through. But some legislators are trying to introduce a bill that would make it possible for people to donate to things like the wall. There are already mechanisms in place to donate to the national debt and social security. So a border wall fund that people can donate to is something that might actually become a real thing. That will make me a bit nervous, because it would open the door to wealthy people funding 'government' projects that are opposed by the majority of the people.
On the other hand, I once toyed with the idea of starting a not for profit fund to put money together for funding a comprehensive national mass transit system. But there were landmines all over the place with a fund like that. Probably wouldn't be legal. I would love it if the DOT started an aggressive project of joining all of the nation's transit system into one organization and then built it into a comprehensive system. Then maybe the DOT could have a fund set up to accept contributions for the project.
That may happen, as high-speed trains finally catch up to Europe ... if they ever do.
