He claims that he doesn't identify with any label on the spectrum, and claims that he thinks it's better to join no caucus, but perhaps he can't just scamper in to the progressive caucus because he knows how that will look. It would look like he blows around with the wind,
I don't think playing the independent is going to wash that New Dem smell off of him. Sherrod Brown is probably going to enter the race. He's the most conservative of the progressives, but he's been a rock steady progressive for his entire career. If Beto tries to run in a lane that is close to Sherrod's, Sherrod is going to win that contest.
If Sherrod were to win the nomination, I am certain that I would vote for him. If Beto won, I don't know if I can get past his New Dem smell.
Brown hasn't announced he's running, and I'm not so certain he will. If he does, I'm not so sure that he would be the obvious choice next to Beto.
Those past domestic abuse allegations could be prove to be a thorn in his side, to say the least. His ex-wife has since refuted the claims and come out in support of him, but the court records and written account of what she SAYS he did are still there.
Under the glare of the national spotlight, that could prove to be deeply problematic for his campaign.
