I decided against asking the loony for advice in case whatever it is he has is catching via the internet, like a virus.
Instead, I went to a tech forum .Rather than simply answering the questions, one bloke told me I have the slowest iMac, and a couple suggested I buy an external T5 SSD and run the Imac from that. (about $300)
Finally, after repeating the questions, a helpful person posted solutions for me. I'm very grateful. A bit of stuffing around, but I don't have to buy anything.
