It’s a pretty simple equation from the POV of yield. The main limiting factors are the length of the growing season and the price of labor.
Thanking southern states ( or frankly, the global south) for impoverishing themselves is probably the wrong way to run with it.
Most farmers aren’t hicks at all. You’re thinking of the exploited labor. Most farmers are illegal immigrants, lol.
The only way to turn a dime by “being a farmer”, the guys you’re thinking about, between 5 and 50 acres, is to move north. The people doing that successfully, in general, have college degrees....usually in tech or
marketing.
Alternatively, we’re working with land grants and bulk data gathering for the epa, nrcs, or community boards. Shit like that. You’re welcome anyway.
