From what I've read they're trying to incorporate elements of the Jar Jar Abrams timeline into it.
"Picard is devastated by the destruction of Romulus".
As much as I like Patrick Stewart, I'm not expecting anything good from this.

I think the real cause of friction was the extremely excessive two pico-seconds of joy Jean Luc allowed himself when he was five. You've seen Tapestry, you know what Picard men are supposed to be like.
