He’s being smeared because he knew that Russia was interfering in 2016 and held out democratic process hostage to his ambitions. He’s since helped broker a deal that allow Oleg Deripaska to evade sanctions. Then he blocked election security bills. Now his former staffers have managed to get a nice big Russian aluminum plant in our state, from the aforementioned sanctions evasion scheme.
All of this is -while- he and his wife have been grifting off the criminal in chiefs administration, and after he stacked lifetime seats with the explicit intention of holding on to increasingly unrepresentative amounts of power for as long as possible, whatever the cost.
He hasn’t exactly been doing a stellar job for the state he allegedly represents, either.
He’s a swamp rat.
It's perfectly understandable why he would block election security bills. It's because he is a toady for a President who views free, fair and open elections as a threat to his power.
