Most countries have military backgrounds, but the ones which go on to greatness do so not by clinging to militancy. What has made countries great is advancing the quality of life of their people, which is much more than simply maintaining a standing militia.
Have a look at the EU overview of Turkey from a few years ago. The workforce is in a sad way. No wonder the military is popular. Education is very low compared to EU standards. No wonder the military is popular. A social misogyny is clearly evident. No wonder the military is popular.
