To be fair, the new MyPlate isn't that different.

They still suggest avoiding fats, sugars and sodium.
I agree with the sugar part, but I'm not so convinced that fats and sodium are that much of a problem if you're working out and drinking plenty of water. Like I said, there are varying views on the topic, though.
I am 6'3", about 220. Technically, I could be considered overweight, but I don't have much body fat, and I'm fit. Not as cut up as I'd like to be but I think I look and feel pretty good. I eat plenty of fats and sodium. Obviously, the supposed risk with sodium is cholesterol and heart problems, so maybe down the line I'll see those effects.
However, I have plenty of buddies who are very serious into weight lifting, body building and various sports, and quite a few of them are on the ketogenic diet, which rejects the idea that fats are bad for you. I don't know, it's only anecdotal. But when I see super healthy, good looking people around me who are active and fit, and they eat tons of fats along with high amounts of protein and fiber rich veggies, I have to wonder how right the conventional methods of nutrition and dieting are.
Except that it doesn’t recommend avoiding all fats; it recommends consuming less saturated fat and more unsaturated fats. In fact, the new nutrition fact label has done away with “percent of calories from fat” because the research bears out that the type of fat is more important to human health than the amount.
