I would dangle a piece of meat outside a small enclosure attached to the larger one. When the cat came in hoping for a snack I would step on a peddle that dropped the door. THEN the other humans went in and cleaned the cage. They were NEVER in the same space with the cats when they were awake, EVER. I did some of the darting because the local vet couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.
My best friend Bob, who passed away, was from Australia. His sister Debra and her husband will went to Asia and actually hugged tigers. Twice I visited them after Bob's death, in Brisbane, and both times they took me to Erwin's Zoo, known there as "Australia Zoo". They have a tiger enclosure with giant glass windows replacing most zoo's prison bars. But, when looking through those windows you'd see 3 or 4 zoo keepers in the enclosure with the tigers.
And all I thought both times on both trips, looking at humans in the same proximity with those tigers was, " BETTER YOU THAN ME!"
