The lack of integrity on one side should not hurt it more than the same lack of integrity on the other side.
What makes democracy theoretically worthwhile at all is its practice leads to more enlightened assessment of policy options, not the tendency to devolve to the rule of the more effective thrower of shit.
Right now American democracy is not looking good at all next to dictatorships in some other countries.
All powers involved friend or foe, it isn't a stretch to say that the more power one has, the more one thinks they can get away with anything.
Ethics is when you stop before you go too far, or when called out you step down.
And I agree, right now, our open system based on checks and balances is under threat.
