Old joke. Reference to the catholic promissing to god some task like going barefoot to fatima, on knees and other holy places:

Two guys are going up a flight of stairs to the cathedral, another guy is rolling down the stairs. The closest guy just side stepped and let him roll. The other said "brother, why didn't you help him?" To wich he replied "brother, he could've been fulfilling a promise to god.
