Right, but that's not what I said. When you move a pawn to your opponents first rank, it doesn't have to be promoted to queen - it can be promoted to any piece you like (although they are almost always made queen). You're correct than you can't declare it a queen and then play it as a knight, but you can declare it as a knight and play it that way.
