At this point if the cop says he has regret for the shooting he instantly screws up his potential defense.

I am pretty sure that his lawyer and the PD have advised him not to say anything that may be used against him.

Whatever it is that he feels, to attempt to keep his own ass out of prison he has to present as though this was legitimate shooting due to fearing for his life.
