The percentage of african americans that are below the poverty line combined with the tendency of grocers to locate themselves nearer to money means that african americans are less likely to have access to a healthy diet than to a dollar store diet. A similar dynamic exists with school funding since it's linked to property values, leaving many african americans without the knowledge, if they had the opportunity. Add to this the fact that the snap program is essentially a subsidy for grain processors, and you might understand how racism is a main contributor to obesity.
Don't worry, though, since the dollar store model is predicate on locating itself where a walmart would fail, and with school funding being raided by the for profit crowd, and the need for public assistance reaching great depression levels, no...no nvm, it's only going to get worse.
You asked wtf was wrong with america, and the answer to that is lots - but one of those things is systemic racism. Being systemic, there's very little that it doesn't effect.
