Abandonment of the church should not be taken as indicative of abandonment of conservative politics - it's not. People who identify as catholic (regardless of whether they attend church) are pretty well split between conservative liberal and independent. Factors other than their shared religion more strongly correlate with political affiliation. This is not the case with evangelical protestants, for example.
