That's the credibility laundromat at play - what his religion has done to him. It would be amazing if the belief set had survived 2k years without ever uttering a single true phrase. We find alot of truth about human nature in magic book, the authors really liked the work of pagan stoics and were...in fact...human.
By pointing to whatever true (and truly stolen, lol) things that their faith has uttered, they engender belief and credence in the seething mass of ridiculous and evil shit they also claim - the shit that's theologically and politically important to them. It's a fairly standard way to condition someone. Inventing reality whole cloth is too much of a lift.
