For the reason hit upon above. It's what they want to be true, and what we want to be true isn't necessarily connected to what is (nor does it have to be for us to make it so).
That there was never any man from the sky who wrestled with a jew all day is irrelevant to whether or not we've created order on the basis thereof here n he very real world - and..similarly, that there was never any jesus does not and frankly cannot even begin to approach the truth (or falsehood) of the ideology attributed to the character.
