Because Mitch is the most powerful GOP member in the Senate. He may not get everyone on board now, but this is sending a big message for the entire party. I really don't see January 6th becoming another circus now. I think when Pence reads off the votes, it will be a fizzle for the GOP.

And just for the record, if you've ever found yourself wondering why the American Senate is so slow to do much of anything, especially when it comes to doing shit the rest of the developed world takes for granted, he's it. Remember when America came dangerously close to bankrupting itself twice during the Obama administration? He helped spearhead it. Remember how Obamacare became an extremely watered-down version of the sort of health care system that the rest of the Western World has been working with for decades instead of a kinda watered-down version? His shenanigans ensured that. Remember when the Republicans decided they wouldn't even hold a vote on any Supreme Court nominee Barack Obama decided to nominate no matter how anodyne? He made it happen. And even though he seems to privately hate Trump and his behaviour, when it comes to doing his job, he still does everything he can to keep Trump's agenda going, up to and including working with the White House to turn Trump's impeachment into a travesty that couldn't even be bothered to call witnesses who were willing to corroborate the charges laid against him.
