In a trial by jury, the verdict has to be unanimous either way or a hung jury is declared, which leaves the prosecutor open to try the case again with a new jury. A hung jury is NOT the same thing as acquittal. In the case of these rioters being tried for a range of different crimes, they will be offered various plea deals that would avoid a jury trial and possibly convictions of serious crimes. Some people will accept and others will push it to trial, where their punishment will be far more severe. I expect the vast majority to accept plea deals and avoid the stigma of convicted felon hanging over them for the rest of their life. However, it would be pretty fun seeing most of the jackasses go to prisons that they regularly claim life is sweet and you get all the great food you want and free room and board. I'd like to hear how they like it after 6 months.
BTW, I've been called for jury duty 3 times and in all but one I was not picked to even get to the courtroom. However, the last time I got as far as the final couple dozen people. On the final day of jury selection, the accused was brought to the courtroom where he could see all of us sitting there, waiting to be selected or dismissed. He changed his plea to guilty and took a deal. The judge said this happens a lot. When the accused gets a look at the faces that will judge him, it often makes them change their mind and take the deal. It also helps that DAs have a habit of piling on charges that seem repetitive, so you could get charged with 5 or 6 different things like trespassing and unlawful entry when really you just stole a bike off of someone's front lawn. It makes the penalty go way up and scares the shit out of most people. 20 years for stealing a bike! What?

Why is it so?
