The other reason is so that the country doesn't go broke. However, while the Conservatives under Mulroney started a fiscal-responsibility shift, it was the Chretien Liberals who completed it. And right now, fiscal responsibility is off the table for both parties. So, who knows who will keep the country running without bankrupting it. Does anyone still remember the 70s?

Michael Wilson and Paul Martin were the two people who actually cared about getting the deficit under control.  Perhaps no-one else did, but they did, and they succeeded.
