Even if one is arguing your usage, it is still intellectual laziness. The real answers are going to be found in the NTSB investigation. "Miracle" isn't an explanation. It is a word used as an emotional reaction to stress and surviving that stress.
If I had been on that plane, I damned sure would have been freaking out and shitting my pants. Just mere turbulence scares the shit out of me. But I would just simply say, "glad I didn't die" and be extremely happy I didn't die. But that is how I would put it. That is simply one word I hate hearing being used after such events.
You are pretty much the last person I would go to for advice on the language. However, you are an expert on intellectual laziness so you might have some answers there.
I'm actually surprised you don't freak out and shit your pants on the regular.
I will concede if the conclusion as to why this event happened is chalked up to the word "miracle", no matter which definition you chose to use. Lets wait for the NTSB report and see what they chalk it up to.
"Oh shit" is a reaction, not an explanation. Either chalking it up to a sky daddy, or merely using it as "Phew, I survived, that was close" are reactions, not explanations. "Miracle" is word used in utterance in a moment of stress and surviving that stress. Quite normal, but hardly an explanation.
