A really really dumb argument from a right-winger. So let's break this down.

I can sympathize with people that are in that position

Just not enough sympathy to be inconvenienced 

, but why should the government take from someone else

It's not taking. It's contributing to the society you are a part of. You are the government.

to pay for someone else’s poor choices.

You're not paying to make sure a child winds up a productive member of society rather than an issue.

  You should rely on your family if you are struggling. 

So instead of burdening the government, you should burden your family instead

 Government dependency isn’t going to solve the problem

Your confusing dependency of simply helping and that's just an assertion.
