It's ridiculous and childish that they'd respond to you that way, but it's also completely normal on the Internet.
People are proud of being vulgar. They get a kick out of trying to make you feel bad. Obviously, anyone who wants to make another person feel bad when he doesn't have to is just a bad person. But they have all kinds of ways to justify it, and it gives them pleasure.
There's no way to make them stop or to "win" a fight with someone like that. The main thing is to make sure you are never like that.
It's a shame because the Linux community is already small.
Their behavior pushes newcomers away and that snowballs because with fewer users, bugs go undetected and unreported.
Some of those newcomers might be future programmers and maintainers. Some of them will be in corporations and making decision. They will just whatever they were using at home and school.
Someone wrote on his own page that he has even seen Linux users comment "That we don't want gamers on Linux. No need to port games to Linux."
I want games ported to Linux! Why? Because it means better drivers from nVidia and AMD and Intel. It means that they will put more programmers on their Linux driver team.
Each guy is pulling the cord in a different direction. It's sad.
