Afghanistan is tough to conquer, but one should not mythologize the difficulty.   It is tough but doable, especially if the Afghans can not draw on heavy outside support.

The Afghan resistance survived the soviet occupation because of heavy US, Saudi, Pakistaniand Chinese support, and being able to operate out of protected bases across the border in Pakistan that the soviets can’t touch.    Prior to the start of heavy US support for the afghan resistance in 1984, the Soviets were very close to crushing the Afghan resistance completely and pacifying the country.
