I didn't learn the truth in school, so while relatively sane, I did not realize the entirety and gravity of our history. Did you? I mean, did you really? We had a whitewashed version. 
Learning about the past isn't about changing it, it's about avoiding such atrocity again, and also recognizing its lingering and ugly effect on modern culture.
