What's wrong is that this notion runs all over their dogma. These people have built powerful barriers between reality and their cherished fairy tales. To admit that one item may be incorrect would be to call the entire fairy tale into question. After all, if the hell narrative is bullshit what else might be bullshit? To them this is the opposite of faith. Their god simply cannot be greater than they have imagined. They've boxed him in and they'd like to keep him in their comfort zone. Dogma is a sort of Maginot Line of religious thinking. It looks like an impressive fortification, until someone decides to drive right around it, then it's just an embarrassment.
