The designed service life of the hull is about 50 years. after 50 years of continuous service, normal corrosion actually begin to threaten watertight integrity of parts of the hull and the ability of the ship to withstand battle damage becomes degraded.
during the last few patrol of an aircraft carrier about to retire, the ship sometimes actually sail with some structural compartments flooded due to leakage not worthwhile to repair.
Wow, that seems surprising. I wouldn't have guessed.
