But I want him to explain how they ended up on the list of recognized mental disorders in the first place.

From what I understand, it happened because professionals realised that just treating homosexuality as a deviant behaviour wasn't helping the people who did it. Of course, eventually the APA removed it as a diagnosis in 1973, largely because they realised it didn't necessarily have to be a problem and the vast majority of the trouble could be averted if straight people learned to tolerate them. And, bear in mind, at the time, between 4 and 7 of the 50 states had legalised it (I could find neither the date the APA made their decision nor the dates Delaware, Hawaii, and North Dakota repealed their sodomy laws). 1/10 of the nation's population (a bit less than that if none of the last three states changed their laws before the APA changed the DSM) lived in a jurisdiction where homosexuality was legal, so I doubt that the gay lobby was that powerful.
