Presumably because of repression. The Bible Belt is also the biggest consumer of non-gay porn.

And teenage pregnancy, and abortion, and a lot of things that puritanical religious people are supposed to be against. Because abstinence only doesn't work. Telling people not to do something, and then doing nothing to mitigate the consequences or temptation, doesn't help stop it.
